Compress a video for Discord.

Get a clip under your upload limit so it plays right in the chat. Starts at 10 MB, on your device, nothing uploaded.

How do I compress a video for Discord for free?

Drop the video into Cutmallow's compressor above. It opens set to fit 10 MB, a size every Discord account can upload, and works out the bitrate that lands just under it. If your limit is higher (Nitro or a boosted server), type that size instead. Your browser re-encodes the video to an H.264 MP4 that plays inline in Discord. Nothing is uploaded and there's no watermark.

How to use it

  1. Drop a video (or tap to pick one). The compressor opens at 10 MB.

  2. Change the size if your Discord limit is higher, then tap Compress video.

  3. Save the MP4 and drag it into Discord.

How it works

A file’s size is its bitrate times its length. The compressor reads how long your video is, subtracts room for the sound, and gives the rest to the video at a steady bitrate, so a 10 MB target lands near 10 MB whether the clip is 15 seconds or two minutes.

If a long clip would need a bitrate too low for its resolution to look clean, it lowers the resolution for you and says so before you start. You can also pick the resolution and frame rate yourself; a lower frame rate leaves more bits for each frame.

The encoding is done by your browser’s own video encoder. Your video never leaves your device.

Tips for a better result

  • Trim to the moment you want to share first: shorter clips stay sharper at 10 MB.
  • Set the target a little under your limit, like 9 MB for a 10 MB limit.
  • Filmed at 60 fps? Pick 30 and every frame gets more detail.

Turn it into a Short

Cutmallow's free editor finishes the job. After compressing, tap Edit in Cutmallow and your file opens there, still on your device.

  • Cuts the pauses and filler words
  • Writes animated word-by-word captions
  • Exports a 9:16 MP4 for Shorts, Reels and TikTok

What is the Discord file size limit?

It depends on your account and the server: free accounts have long been capped at 10 MB, Nitro Basic and Nitro allow much more, and boosted servers raise it for everyone in them. Discord tells you your limit when a file is too big. Aim just under it; 10 MB fits every account.

Why does my compressed video still say it is too large?

The compressor aims just under the target, but the last few percent can vary from clip to clip. Set the target a little under your limit, for example 9 MB for a 10 MB limit, and compress again.

How do I keep the video sharp at 10 MB?

Shorter is sharper: trim the clip to the part you want to share first. A lower frame rate (30 instead of 60) and a smaller resolution also give each frame more detail at the same size.

Is my video uploaded to compress it?

No. Your video never leaves your device. Your browser's own video encoder does the work and the result is saved from your device.
